Dear Parents,
I cordially invite you to be a partner in your child's education. Ask what your child is learning about and check their homework folder every night. There you will find newsletters and notes sent home, as well as any work that needs to be completed. I believe homework serves three purposes: 1.) to give students an opportunity to practice being responsible by completing work and turning it in on time; 2.) to reinforce already taught concepts; and, 3.) to give parents an idea of the important concepts being taught in the classroom. However, I also believe that third graders need plenty of time in the afternoon and evening to relax, play and do activities that promote their physical, emotional and intellectual growth. Homework should not take longer than 40 minutes!
Consequently, I encourage you to set up a scheduled time and a quiet location for your child to do their homework everyday. Students should be able to do assignments independently, but do help if necessary. If you notice your child is not able to complete an assignment on his or her own, please send a note to me. I will contact you if your child is falling behind or doing poor work.
Sincerely,
Melissa Ferguson
